Make Delicious and Nutritious Wheat Berries in Your Instant Pot
Wheat berries are a whole grain that is packed full of nutrition and flavor. They have a chewy texture, nutty flavor, and are incredibly versatile in the kitchen. Wheat berries have been a staple in many diets for centuries and are an excellent source of protein, fiber, and vitamins. With the invention of the Instant Pot, you can now enjoy these nutritious grains in a fraction of the time it would take to cook them on the stovetop.
If you want to make wheat berries in your Instant Pot, you’ll need to start by selecting the right type of wheat berries for your recipe. Hard red wheat berries are the most commonly used for baking and other recipes, but you can also use soft white wheat berries for a slightly more mild flavor. The cooking time for either type of wheat berries in your Instant Pot will be the same.
Once you’ve selected the type of wheat berries you want to use, it’s time to prepare them for cooking. Start by rinsing them in a colander or strainer. This helps to remove any dirt or debris that may have collected on the grains. Then, place the wheat berries in a bowl and cover them with water. Allow the wheat berries to soak for at least 6 hours, or overnight if you prefer.
When your wheat berries are finished soaking, it’s time to cook them in your Instant Pot. Start by adding 2 cups of wheat berries to the pot and covering them with 2 cups of water. Secure the lid and set your Instant Pot to the “Manual”, “High Pressure” setting for 25 minutes. Once the cooking time is finished, allow the pressure to naturally release for 10 minutes before manually releasing any remaining pressure.
Once the pressure has been released, carefully remove the lid and fluff the wheat berries with a fork. If the wheat berries are still a bit firm, add 1/2 cup of water to the pot and cook for an additional 5 minutes. If the wheat berries are too soft for your liking, cook them for a few minutes less.
Serving Ideas
Wheat berries are incredibly versatile and can be served in a variety of ways. For a simple side dish, combine cooked wheat berries with your favorite herbs and seasonings. For a more substantial meal, add cooked wheat berries to salads, soups, and stews. You can also use cooked wheat berries as a substitute for rice or pasta in many recipes.
Storing Your Leftovers
Leftover cooked wheat berries can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. For longer storage, you can freeze cooked wheat berries for up to 3 months. To reheat, simply thaw overnight in the refrigerator and then reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop.
